A key part of the Company’s commitment to the responsible development of the Marcona project is community consultation, the establishment of good community relationships and a focus on community capacity building, education and health. We keep the public informed of our activities through public meetings, newsletters, press releases and radio interviews. As part of our commitment to capacity building and education, in 2005, Chariot initiated a training program for youths in the local area between the ages of 18-29. The program consists of focus group sessions to identify the attitudes, hopes and aspirations of youths in the local area, and testing in mathematics, reading and comprehension to establish baseline educational levels. With this information, we have worked with a Peruvian training institute and are training approximately 200 youths in the local area to create skills that will help both men and women find employment in industries in the Region of Ica– skills that include mechanical and electrical training as well as textile manufacture and tourism.
To make a positive impact in the local area, we partner with local government, other companies and institutions in activities of interest to the community. Chariot established a Working Group for the Environmental Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) . This group consists of representatives from five different sectors – health, education, environment, fisheries, and government.
The working group is a key component of the ESIA process from start to finish, and participates in the various field campaigns, impact assessment analysis and public presentations of the progress. In this way the community will have direct and active involvement in the development of a successful and well-received ESIA for Marcona.
